A Brief History of Rock City

Rock City was established in 1932 by Garnet Carter and his wife, Frieda. Inspired by Frieda's love for European folklore, they transformed the ancient rock formations into a whimsical rock garden. They enlisted the help of a German landscape architect, and together, they created enchanting trails, charming bridges, and unique sculptures. Today, Rock City remains a testament to its creativity and vision.

The Seven States View

One of the most iconic features of Rock City is the breathtaking Seven States View. Positioned at Lover's Leap, a dramatic cliff edge, visitors can marvel at panoramic vistas that extend across seven states: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. This awe-inspiring view is a testament to the natural beauty of the region and offers an unparalleled experience for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Enchanted Trail and Fairyland Caverns

As you walk along the Enchanted Trail, you are transported into a magical world filled with unique rock formations, charming gardens, and hidden surprises. One of the highlights of this trail is the Fairyland Caverns, where you can explore a subterranean wonderland adorned with intricate dioramas depicting scenes from fairy tales and nursery rhymes. These handcrafted displays, illuminated by black light, create a surreal and enchanting ambiance. This area was one of my favorites, it really brought the nostalgia for our childhood.

Lover's Leap and High Falls

Lover's Leap, a prominent cliff edge within Rock City, is not only famous for its incredible views but also for its rich folklore. Legend has it that two Native American lovers, from warring tribes, chose to leap from this cliff rather than be kept apart. Another notable feature is the breathtaking High Falls, a 140-foot waterfall that cascades down the side of Lookout Mountain, offering a majestic sight to behold.

Mother Goose Village and Storybook Characters

Adjacent to Fairyland Caverns lies Mother Goose Village, a delightful area featuring larger-than-life statues of beloved storybook characters. Children and adults alike can interact with characters such as Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet, and Jack and Jill, making for a memorable and immersive experience. The whimsy of Mother Goose Village adds an extra touch of enchantment to Rock City's already magical atmosphere. The details that have gone into this experience was immense and worthy of so much praise. It's the feeling of being a kid again.

Rock City Gardens

In addition to its captivating rock formations and scenic overlooks, Rock City boasts meticulously manicured gardens that add splashes of vibrant colors to the landscape. The gardens feature an impressive array of indigenous and exotic plants, including azaleas, rhododendrons, and ferns. The blooming flowers and lush foliage create a tranquil and serene environment, inviting visitors to relax and appreciate nature's beauty.
